ITR Filing Made Simple: A Step-by-Step Walkthrough for Salaried Employees

Form 16 in one tab, the income tax portal in another, mild panic in a third. Here's the calm, click-by-click path from 'log in' to 'e-verified' — no CA required for most salaried returns.

Every July, Nikhil performs the same ritual: opens the income tax portal, stares at it for four minutes, whispers 'I'll do it this weekend', and closes the tab. Repeat until panic. This year, we're breaking the loop — because for most salaried people, filing an ITR is genuinely a 30–40 minute job.

Before you start: the 15-minute prep

  • Form 16 from your employer (the salary + TDS summary).
  • Login for incometax.gov.in (PAN is your user ID; link Aadhaar if not done).
  • Interest certificates or bank statements for FD/savings interest.
  • Proof handy for deductions if you're in the old regime — 80C, health insurance, HRA rent receipts (see our HRA guide).
  • Capital gains statements from your broker/fund apps, if you sold anything.
Which form am I?

ITR-1 (Sahaj): salary + one house property + interest income, total income up to ₹50 lakh. Most salaried folks live here. Sold shares or mutual funds? You're likely in ITR-2. The portal also suggests a form — but knowing this beforehand kills half the anxiety.

Step 1: Log in and start the return

On incometax.gov.in → e-File → Income Tax Returns → File Income Tax Return. Pick the assessment year (for income earned in FY 2025–26, that's AY 2026–27), choose 'Online' mode, and select your form. Deadlines and form details are covered in our ITR 2026 deadlines guide.

Step 2: Cross-check the pre-filled data

The portal now pre-fills salary, TDS, and interest from your AIS (Annual Information Statement) and Form 26AS. Do not blindly click Next. Match salary and TDS against Form 16, and check that every bank's interest shows up. Mismatches between your return and AIS are the number-one cause of those scary-looking notices — which are usually just 'please explain this ₹4,000 difference'.

Step 3: Pick your regime and claim deductions

The portal asks: new regime (lower rates, almost no deductions) or old regime (higher rates, but 80C, HRA, health insurance, home loan interest all count). If you have significant deductions, do the comparison honestly — our new vs old regime breakdown walks through the math. The portal shows tax under your chosen regime; you can toggle and compare before committing.

Step 4: Review the tax computation

The portal totals your income, applies deductions, and shows tax payable or refund due. Small amount payable? Pay it right there via 'e-Pay Tax' (it becomes self-assessment tax). Refund due? Confirm the bank account selected for refund is pre-validated — an un-validated account is the most common reason refunds get stuck.

Step 5: Submit — then e-verify (don't skip this!)

Filing isn't finished at 'Submit'. An unverified return is legally not filed. E-verify instantly via Aadhaar OTP (easiest), net banking, or a pre-validated bank account. You have 30 days, but do it in the same sitting — future you cannot be trusted. Then download the ITR-V acknowledgement for your records.

An unverified ITR is like an unsent WhatsApp message — typed with love, delivered to no one.
Key takeaways
  • Gather Form 16, AIS, and interest details first; the actual filing is ~30 minutes for most salaried returns.
  • Always reconcile pre-filled data with Form 16 and AIS — mismatches trigger notices.
  • Compare new vs old regime inside the portal before submitting; the right choice can save real money.
  • E-verification (Aadhaar OTP) is mandatory — an unverified return doesn't count.
  • Pre-validate your bank account to receive refunds without drama.

What's the step that usually makes you close the tab? Start there this weekend — with Form 16 open in the next window. Educational walkthrough, not professional tax advice; complex cases (foreign income, business income, ESOPs) deserve a good CA.

Frequently asked questions

Can I file my ITR myself without a CA?

For a typical salaried return (ITR-1, even most ITR-2 cases), yes — the portal pre-fills most data and guides you through. A CA earns their fee when you have business income, foreign assets, ESOPs, or messy capital gains.

What happens if I miss the ITR deadline?

You can usually file a belated return with a late fee (up to ₹5,000 depending on income) and you lose the ability to carry forward certain losses. Refunds also get delayed. Filing on time is cheaper in every way.

Why is my refund delayed even after e-verification?

The most common culprits: bank account not pre-validated on the portal, a mismatch between your return and AIS data, or the return picked for routine processing checks. Track status under 'View Filed Returns' on the portal.
